Carmakers rush to launch scrappage schemes for September push

on 04 September 2017

Renault, Nissan, Kia have become the latest brands to announced scrappage schemes in the UK to boost sales in the September plate-change and the final quarter of 2017.

The slowing new car market is now awash with scrappage schemes as carmakers fight for market share in the plate-change this month.

The Renault, Nissan and Kia announcements today follow hard on Volkswagen Group UK’s move to launch a  diesel scrappage schemes for Audi, Skoda, Seat, Volkswagen and Volkswagen commercial vehicles in the UK. Offers are available to owners of pre Euro 5 diesel vehicle registered before 2010.

For the Volkswagen discounts range from £1,800 to £6,000.  The cars have to be ordered by 31 December 2017 and the trade-in vehicle needs to have been owned by the customer for at least six months. For Audi the discounts range from £2,000 to £8,000, Seat from £1,500 to £3,000 and Skoda £1,500 to £4,000.

VW’s UK schemes follow those introduced in Germany which offer a discount of up to 10,000 euros (£9,000) to trade in diesel vehicles.

Toyota launched its own scrappage scheme this week. It followed Hyundai, which last month launched a programme offering between £1,545 and £5,000 on trade-ins across its model range.

Market leader Ford kick-started the trend in August offering £2,000 trade-ins on new cars and vans registered from 1 September through to December.

Vauxhall launched a scrappage scheme in May while both BMW and Mercedes-Benz are offering trade-ins on older diesel models.
